Chikan Embroidery
A skill more than 200 years old, Lucknow’s Chikan embroidery is world renowned for its timeless grace and beauty. The craft is still alive and is still fighting to regain some of its former beauty as well as elegance. But, it doesn’t go out of style. Wearing chikan, you will feel as if you are wearing a piece of history. It is a form of writing that has been a form of Indian traditions for centuries.
Chikan embroidery is generally performed on cotton fabric. On one hand, the garments are first stiched and then embroidered, on the other hand skirts, sarees and table linen are first embroidered and then finished.
Studying about its origin, Chikan embroidery first came to India from Persia with Noor Jehan, the queen of Mughal Emperor Jehangir. The very word ‘chikan’ is the derivative of Persian word ‘chikaan’ that means drapery. Thus, the craft flourished under nwabi influence. The ladies of harem competed with each other in making white embroidered caps for the nwabs for being noticed and favored. In the early years, garments were so fragile that they had to be discarded after a few washes. This is why early samples of chikan garments aren’t available. With the coming of British empire, the designs became more formal and items other than ethnic apparel commenced its creation. This, in turn, brought a formalization of designs and resulted in an export market. The items made their place in the prestigious homes of Europe and England.
One of the most commonly used design is ‘bel’ or ‘creeper’. Individual floral motifs may embellish the entire garment or just one corner. Among the floral motifs embroidered, the jasmine, rose, flowering stems, lotus and pasley motifs are quite popular. Fish or mahi is also widely used in Lucknow.
The design that is to be embroidered is firstly printed on the fabric with wooden blocks through usage of fugitive colors that in turn, is commonly made through mixing a glue and indigo with water. For those extra fine designs, brass-blocks are sometimes made use.
The main stiches used in chikan embroidery are- Taipchi, Pechni, Pashni, Bakhia, Khatao, Gitti, Jangira etc.The bolder stiches include Murri, Phanda, Jaalis etc.
Today, chikan work isn’t available only in colored threads but also on all kinds of fabrics such as silk, crepe, chiffon etc.
